Aikido is a martial art, but it is also more than a martial art.

Because of its breadth, people study Aikido for many different reasons.

Below are some paths into understanding Aikido and why one might want to study it.

We'll expand this section soon.

Here are some typical questions and concerns:

I've practiced another martial art and I'm looking for something new.

I'm trying to understand how does Aikido fit into martial arts?  How does it compare to karate or taikwando?

I'm investigating different martial arts, can you give me some general information?

Can parents and children practice together?

How does Aikido compare to Yoga?

Is there a spirtual or religious component to Aikido?

Does Aikido help in my day to day life and interactions?

I have some injuries.  Can I still practice Aikido?  Can Aikido help physical problems I have?

Our Dojo

Framingham Aikikai is a traditional Aikido dojo, founded in January 2000. Its Chief Instructor, David Halprin 6th dan, is a student of Mitsunari Kanai Sensei, 8th dan, and studied with him for twenty-seven years.

Kanai Sensei, Chief Instructor of New England Aikikai in Cambridge, was one of the last group of uchideshi (live-in students) of O-Sensei, and studied under the Founder for ten years before being sent to teach Aikido in the US. He taught at New England Aikikai for thirty-eight years until he passed away in March 2004.

Framingham Aikikai has been located since inception at 61 Fountain Street in Framingham .

Its instructors and students were under the continuing technical supervision of Kanai Sensei and now are among those who are continuing to practice Aikido according to his teachings.

There is no other dojo that has an equal concentration of instructors who were close students of Kanai Sensei.

Framingham Aikikai students and instructors come from all over the Metrowest region, as well as from towns closer in, such as Cambridge, Somerville, Waltham, Wellesley, Newton and Boston, and from towns in the Worcester area.

Framingham Aikikai is extremely fortunate to have been under the continuing direction of Kanai Sensei until his passing in 2004.
